Critically Evaluate Live Tweets (W8-W12)

I’m proud to say my live-tweeting skill has been improved greatly.


The last critical reflection about live tweets helps me on week8-12. I collected feedbacks from,

  • A, the comments and advice from my tutor, Angus,
  • B, other student’s first self-reflection blog in the Future Culture blog
    The combination of both worked very well for me.

Based on all the information I gathered, I changed my preparation routine for screening slightly. Here is my prepare routine.

  • Go to Wikipedia, IMDB (or another similar film introduction website) to read through the main storyline, and write down the things that I think I can dig deeper.
  • Go through the Lecture.
  • Search the relevant academic reports, news, behind the scenes facts or any other external information to the film and my notes. I usually pay extra attention to topics like Techno-Orientation and product placement.

(I choose those two particular topics because of personal interest, and I think it is interesting to collect things about the same theme from different movies)

In the last blog (week1-6), I mentioned few problems that I have came across and raised a few possible solutions. I think I learned from that and made progress. Here are some examples:

About pre-research and pre-written Tweets


When the film goes to the part that I have done some pre-research, I just insert the Tweets (usually with links) I have prepared to give other people some further information. Those pre-organized Tweets allow me to concentrate on the film and give me extra time to engage with my peers.

After Week 7, I also found that typing in summary about the article I found makes it more clear to other students.

I found out that I am good at linking the film to other news or movies that are stored in my knowledge pool, so I took advantage of that. It seems like other students like that relevant information.

I have to say the connection between Marjorie Prime and the Pixar film Coco (three deaths theory) even made me have goose bump.

About the in-depth study on Techno-Orientation and engagement

As I mentioned in the last post, I’m good at discovering the Asian features in sci-fi films, so I put more efforts into it. Then, the quality of my tweet truly reaches my expectation in the Blade Runner 2049 week, especially those posts and engagements with my classmates about Techno-Orientation. I posted how this film is influenced by the Asian culture, why western sci-fi contains so much Japanese culture, the connection between Cyberpunk and Asian.

Here is a conversation between Amanda and myself; we discussed Asian culture in Blade Runner and extended to Globalization in the film industry.

But, I think I should do the same for every film, and study more topics. For example, I could dig deeper into the relationship between AI and aged group. I think there are many psychological articles available for Robot and Frank (2012).

About the future film and my DA

I spotted the insects is the main protein food in 2049 and posted it. I really like the way I associated the film with my DA! What’s even better? A peer gave me an additional source I can use for my third post. Thank you, Ruby!

About film details

While I tried very hard on creating in-depth post and conversations, I still observed and caught interesting details about the film, and they gained ‘average’ attention from my peers. They add some extra flavor to my timeline.

But I didn’t get that much likes and retweets for those ‘short and pithy’ Tweets. I assume I could use memes or Gifs to improve it.

(I suddenly realize the environment topic in sci-fi film is an excellent topic to dig deeper in the future)

Overall, I think I have developed my live-tweeting skill and my knowledge on the futurology. I learned that I should be well-prepared for this activity, and I should have enough materials on hand about some particular topics. I really appreciate this experience.
